The Gemsbuck is one of our medium to large sized antelopes. It is a beautiful animal, which is a greyish pale fawn colour. It has a black band down the middle of it's back, and is black along it's flanks, with black and white markings on it's face. Both male and female have straight upright horns, which are ridged for approximately 2/3 of their length. They are very good to eat, with the meat tasting very similar to beef.
The males have an average shoulder height of up to 1.2m and weigh around 240kg. The females are around 1.1m shoulder height and weigh 210kg.
This antelope species is found naturally occuring in the arid regions of Southern Africa, in the duneveld (Dunelands) or savannah of the Kalahari region. They occur in very large herds. These antelope are built for the desert and can go for long periods of time without drinking.
There is no easy way to hunt Gemsbuck. The hunt involves lots of walking and stalking and making the most of what cover and aspect is available. Hunting these animals is best done in the early morning or late afternoon.
Minimum Calibre Rifle Required
Gemsbuck are notoriously tough animals with thick skins. Graeme Geldart of Mkhamba Safaris has hunted them with a 308 Win, but that is the smallest calibre he would go to with this animal. A 300 Win Mag has been Graeme's weapon of choice for the last 10 years. Use premium grade bullets.
Minimum Requirements for:
